Chess for orphans

Alongside the World Team Championships in Astana, The Kazakhstan Chess Federation and FIDE have planned side events for children. A blitz tournament with the participation of members of the “Dinara Saduakasova Chess Academy” took place on the starting day of the WTCC.

Chess has become increasingly popular in Kazakhstan in the past decade, to such extent that many primary and secondary schools teach it as extracurricular subject. The government is even striving to introduce the game in all schools.
Right after winning the Girls Under 20 World Championship in the summer of 2016, Dinara Saduakassova decided to get involved in this movement and use her fame to open her own Chess Academy in Astana. After two and half years, it has already grown from a main office to several subsidiaries. Including itinerant training at public schools, the number of students reaches around 300. A cause close to Dinara’s heart is to teach chess at an orphanage. She explains that “these unfortunate children long to communicate. Chess offers them the environment to do that, be it during classes or through traveling”. The blitz tournament at the AIFC was designed especially for them and gathered more than 30 young participants. It culminated in a particularly touching moment when, in the middle of the Presidential Board meeting, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich spontaneously decided to attend the prize-giving ceremony, together with the Continental President for Asia Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nehyan and KCF President Galimzhan Yessenov. These moments will remain engraved in the memory of all who were present. The presidents made presents to every child and received in return gifts made by hand.
